What a blank cell records, and the three readings it refuses
A blank is recorded in words: no licence statement published, with the date. It asserts that a reader following the ordinary path found nothing, and refuses three other readings that a dash would leave open. As of 2026-09-22.
| Possible reading | Whether the cell asserts it |
|---|---|
| Nothing was found on the pages read | Yes: this is what the phrase means |
| The vendor forbids the use | No |
| The vendor permits the use | No |
| No position exists anywhere | No: negotiated terms are unread |
Inclusion rule. Rules this register applies to every row. A rule is written down here when following it changes what a cell says, or when breaking it would make the grid look more complete than it is. Order. Reading order: the ordinary case first, then the awkward ones.
1A dash is ambiguous in an expensive way
An empty cell can mean the vendor is silent, that no plan of that kind exists, or that nobody checked. Printed as a dash those look the same, and a reader will pick whichever suits the decision in front of them.
Writing the reason in words costs space in a table and removes the ambiguity. Where the question does not arise at all, the cell says so rather than borrowing the phrase used for silence.
2The date is part of the finding
A silence is a fact about a document at a moment. Documents get rewritten, and a cell recording silence without a date cannot be told apart from a cell nobody has looked at since the site launched.
So every blank carries the reading date and a link. A later reader can check in a minute whether the silence is still there, which is the only sensible thing a register can offer about an absence.
3Why a blank is usually not a finding
Where most vendors say nothing about a point, one more saying nothing is the column's normal state. A page arguing that a particular vendor is unusual for its silence would be wrong about the industry.
A blank earns attention only when nearly every other row has something to read. That test is applied on the recorded cells, and it is the reason there are far fewer pages than there are empty cells.
4The rest of the method
A rule about recording, not a statement about any vendor: nothing on this page is attributed and nothing on it is legal advice. The rules are collected on the reading page, the quoted clauses are on commercial use, and the cells this rule produced are on the recorded cells. Nearby rules: Dates, Quoting.
5What the output is for
Alongside the terms behind “Blank cells”, SceneMixer's guides describe the work itself this way:
On a segment’s card, Insert adds a blank segment right after it: write its header and shots.

References in this project’s storyboards are rewritten to the new name, and the old name stays on the card as an entry.
