How the numbers in the prose are kept from drifting
Every count written in a sentence has to match the grid it describes. Adding a row to the register changes numbers on pages written months earlier, and a total that no longer matches is the commonest way a site like this starts lying. As of 2026-09-22.
| Kind of number | How it is kept true |
|---|---|
| A total, as in seventeen vendors | Checked against the register before publishing |
| A share, as in four of the seventeen | The denominator has to be the register's own total |
| A subset, as in two vendors do this | Counted from the grid, and rechecked when rows change |
| A figure quoted from a vendor | Left exactly as published, with the reading date |
Inclusion rule. Rules this register applies to every row. A rule is written down here when following it changes what a cell says, or when breaking it would make the grid look more complete than it is. Order. Reading order: the ordinary case first, then the awkward ones.
1A count is a claim with a short shelf life
Seven vendors naming a plan was true of a smaller grid and is a different sentence now. Every page that mentioned it had to change when rows were added, and a page that did not change became wrong without anybody editing it.
That is why totals are checked mechanically rather than remembered. The failure is silent, it looks like carelessness to a reader, and it is the sort of thing a careful reader checks first.
2Shares are worse than totals
A share has two numbers in it and both can drift. Where a sentence says four of the seventeen, the denominator has to be the register's own total rather than a number that sounded right when the sentence was written.
Subset claims without a denominator are safer and less useful. The register prefers the share where the denominator can be checked and the bare subset where it cannot.
3Vendor figures are not the register's numbers
A price, a threshold or a user ceiling quoted from a document is left exactly as published, with the reading date. Rounding a figure or converting a currency would make it a summary rather than a quotation.
Where a figure changes, the row is re-read and the old reading stays in the dated record. Nothing in the prose is allowed to average or estimate across vendors.
4The rest of the method
A rule about recording, not a statement about any vendor: nothing on this page is attributed and nothing on it is legal advice. The rules are collected on the reading page, the quoted clauses are on commercial use, and the cells this rule produced are on the recorded cells. Nearby rules: Not recorded, Rewording.

Alongside the terms behind “Counting”, SceneMixer's guides describe the work itself this way:
AI Edit Image on a step-2 card keeps the same character and applies a short change you describe — navy blue shirt, short curly hair, smiling — then Apply Edit.
